INTRODUCTION
The Vice
Chancellor’s Message
The
Vice Chancellor, Engr. Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani, in his
address at the convocation held on November 28, 2007
specifically emphasized improving quality of education, and
assured that the NWFP University of Engineering and Technology
was committed to bring the standards of education at par with
international norms. This commitment has already been
partially promoted with the establishment of a Quality
Enhancement Cell.
Why have a
Quality Enhancement Cell
It is a well known fact that the standard of higher education
in Pakistan is way below international norms and there is an
urgent need to bridge the gap in order to earn international
recognition of our degrees and develop a knowledge based
economy. It was in this context that a Quality Assurance
Committee was established in 2003 by Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman,
Chairman, Higher Education Commission. The Quality Assurance
Committee is comprised of the vice chancellors of universities
and HEC policy makers. The committee is given the task to
develop a viable mechanism which can be implemented in the
higher education sector to improve quality. After
conducting a series of consultation meetings with the
concerned stakeholders, the committee recommended the
establishment of Quality Enhancement Cells (QECs) in all
public sector universities to implement the quality
improvement programs under the supervision and guidelines of
the Higher Education Commission. The Quality Enhancement Cells
are monitored, guided and supervised by the Higher Education
Commission’s Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). Following
the HEC directives, the NWFP University of Engineering and
Technology Peshawar initiated the development of a Quality
Enhancement Cell in February 2007. The Cell’s staff is
comprised of a Manager, Deputy Director, Data Analyst, Office
Assistant, and Naib Qasid.
